Munmorah Coal-Powered Power Station Closes Down

You may have heard that Munmorah Coal-Powered Power Station has closed down due to the carbon tax. This is what Delta Electricity’s own media release says:
  • The station has been maintained on standby but has not been in production since August 2010. [Before carbon tax was announced]
  • Munmorah’s place in the market has been overtaken by newer and more efficient generators and alternative electricity sources.
  • The station’s ageing infrastructure and high maintenance costs mean that it is not economically viable to operate.
  • The carbon tax further erodes its viability.
  • Approximately 100 positions were deployed at Munmorah when it was in service and since that time have been reassigned to work at Vales Point.
Whatever your view, it is quite a big stretch for the media and politicians to claim that a power station which has been out of operation since August 2010 has shut down because of the carbon tax.
